Machig Labdron (1055-1152), the matriach of the Chod lineage, was one of the most celebrated female practitioners in Tibetan Buddhism. She introduced the practice of ego-cutting (Chod) based on the Buddha's treatise of the Great Wisdom, Prajna Paramita.

Just as the amazing life story of any enlightened being, Machig Labdron's birth was quite extraordinary, in 11th-century Tibet when most enlightened masters came to this world in male form. Besides she was born with a third eye, in which appeared the seed syllable 'Ah', and she was already reciting the Prajna Paramita sutra while still her mother's womb.
