Druk Gawakhil Padmedhan, Kortsa, Ladakh

Druk Gawakhil Padmedhan is a registered charity under the governance of Indian Trust Law. The nunnery is located in Kortsa, the district of Changthang, near the Indo-China border.

Ladakh is situated between the Himalaya and the Karakoram mountain ranges, with altitudes between 2,500m and 7,000m above sea-level. It borders Tibet, Pakistan and Kashmir Valley and consists of Leh and Kargil districts. Ladakh is the least inhabited part of India because of its very harsh conditions.

In winter, the temperature drops to minus 35 degree Celsius or even lower. As it is very remotely located, away from the bustling town, this is the place where most of the nuns enter into long retreats.

Nestled in the deep valley of Indian Himalayas, surrounded by barren mountains and very little vegetation, our 100 nuns at Druk Gawakhilwa Padmedhan spend most of their time meditating and finishing sets of Preliminaries.

There is a picturesque lake, known as "Jelye Tso", where the nuns go sometimes for picnics and for Sang puja.

As it is a political sensitive area, special permits are required for foreigners to get there.
